About Estonia
Estonia has one of the fastest growing markets in the Baltic Sea Region. Its open economy and a favourable environment for foreign investment have all contributed to Estonia´s success. The country´s ´economic miracle´ has often been described as the Baltic Tiger.
The level of the Estonian economy has also been noted internationally. The country has been ranked as that of high income by the World Bank. In 2008, The Wall Street Journal and Heritage Foundation´s Index of Economic Freedom rated Estonia as the 12th freest economies in the world out of 162 countries. The annual report of Economic Freedom of the World 2007 placed Estonia second after the UK among the EU countries. With its developing economy Estonia is one of the most competitive countries in the Central and Eastern Europe.
Estonia´s main trading partners are Finland, Russia and Sweden with the main exports being machinery, mineral products, wood and wood products. The country is also active in the transit trade through the Baltic Sea.
The IT communications infrastructure is also highly developed in Estonia. As a result, the Internet banking system as well as the mobile banking and mobile parking is widely used every day.
With its 45,000 km2 area and 1.3 million people Estonia is one of the smallest countries in the EU, which Estonia joined in 2004. The country is also a member of the United nations since 1991 and of NATO since 2004.
In 2001 Estonia developed a brand conception to emphasise the new national identity and to introduce the country internationally. The result was a visual sign “Welcome to Estonia”, which has gained attention both domestically and abroad.
